Restaurateurs looking for a somewhat unusual promotional tool for 2010 might want to try something similar to a US eatery's approach.
Denny's is a national chain present in over 1,500 locations and recently announced its intention to give customers free food on their birthday.
The item on the menu with the best customer feedback - the Grand Slam, which is a breakfast dish featuring sausages, bacon, eggs and pancakes - will be given to celebrating diners who stop in at one of the company's restaurants.
John Dillon is vice-president of marketing at Denny's and says the promotion has a family feel to it.
"Eating out on birthdays is a treasured tradition whether it's allowing children to choose their favourite restaurant or treating mum to a meal you know she'll love," he adds.
Reaching customers with a deal such as this could be an ideal strategy for 2010. Owners looking for more unusual marketing promotions might want to get the ball rolling by undertaking menu focus groups or distributing comment cards in order to identify an unmet need or desire.
